As the saying goes, the early bird catches the worm, and after last nights earthquake in lincolnshire the most search for keywords today are bound to be related to this event. So I thought I’d have a look to see if anybody was on the ball and had already added the keywords to their PPC account. A few searches later and it would appear most of the advertisers in the UK were still asleep or in shock from the quake as not many of them had woken up to the opportunity in front of them. From all the searches I completed across various engines only one adveriser had specifically chosen to advertise based on the quake and they are a bean bag company! Brownie points for them or their agency but I cant really see how they are going to get any business out of it. The people who should be on these terms are the news networks and papers, although you could argue their natural rankings should support them, the cost of clicks on these terms would be negligable, 1p-5p depending on the advertiser, and if you compare this to the fees they charge advertisers they would be quids in. I wonder if anybody will wake up over the course of the day?

UPDATE!
people are catching on! the latest search produces 6 paid adwords results, our friends from foambeanbags, thisislincolnshire, itvlocal, the guardian, cornhill insurance and buy-safe insurance. I think some of them may have missed the best of the traffic which will have come first thing but at least they will get the lunchtime traffic. Im not sure that people will be worried enough to take out a new insurance policy off the back of such an isolated incident but at least they are trying it! maybe some of the news site shave been reading my blog!
I think the beanbag guys are really on the ball.
I mean, look at the free PR you’ve given them and the potential they have for getting more PR from other news sites, and even their local TV news if they are clever enough to get the coverage.
I think it’s actually a quite cheeky and clever spin on the whole thing. 10/10 for originality goes to them!
Hats off to the people from Fatsac for their PR nous.
They could have really capitalised by putting together a quirky article for the landing page, which in turn would’ve had a good chance of doing well on the social news sites.
Quick thinking though.
Hi, guys thanks for your comments.
Fatsac’s been using ad words since the start of the year, learning as we go with standard stuff and average results, but its hard to compare when you only run one account.
Watched the early news this morning, hatched a plan while out running and was up and running by 8.30.
I blew £50 in the first half an hour and google kicked out a keyword half an hour later, after that I had about 3/4 hours before all keywords were down, even the foam bean bag stuff.
Stats not all in yet, but about 63K impressions and at 10% click through, averaging 4p.
Not expecting to sell much directly off the day, but when you have product that is so much better than a “bean bag” which is a term set in stone with most people, anything to get the word out is welcome.
Thanks for the nudge on the local TV they’re looking at it tomorrow now.
I’m obviously not entirely qualified to post with you guys but I hope some of the stats are helpful.
Yours Comfortably
